Welcome to the 51st Monday Reset for Sports Parents, a short reflection inside The Youth Sports Parenting Tribe.
Each Monday Reset brings you one word, one idea, and one mindset to help you start the week calm, clear, and connected.
This week’s word is Expectation.
A mom told me after a workshop: “My daughter had the best season of her life, but I spent the whole time waiting for something to go wrong. I don’t think I enjoyed a single game.”
We talk about the expectations we put on our kids. But there’s another layer: the ones we carry for ourselves. That we’ll always say the right thing after a loss, never get frustrated in the stands, and be patient every single time.
When we fall short, we spiral. And that guilt leaks into how we show up the next time.
You won’t get it right every time. That’s not failure, that’s parenting. The goal was never perfection. It’s repair, awareness, and coming back. The parent who says “I didn’t handle that well, I’m sorry” teaches something no perfect parent ever could: love survives mistakes.
This week, let go of one expectation you’ve been carrying for yourself this season. One standard that makes it harder to simply be present.
Take a breath. Reset.
The bar was never perfection. It was showing up, imperfectly, honestly, and again.
